Members of the Humanitarian Youth Group (HYGP) met with Food Security Cluster representatives in Gaza for a presentation and interactive discussion on humanitarian coordination mechanisms, response priorities, key challenges and opportunities to strengthen youth participation in humanitarian work.

The Humanitarian Youth Group (HYGP) held a meeting with Food Security Cluster representatives Ms. Michelle HSU and Mr. Mohammed Al-Afifi at the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) office in Gaza City. The meeting aimed to familiarise young participants with food security coordination mechanisms, discuss challenges related to livelihoods and young people's needs, and explore opportunities for greater youth involvement in humanitarian response efforts.

During the meeting, the Food Security Cluster representatives delivered a presentation outlining the Cluster's work and its role in coordinating efforts among humanitarian organisations. They discussed operational and field-level challenges related to food security and livelihoods in Gaza, highlighting gaps between the needs of affected communities and the assistance currently being provided. The presentation also addressed the importance of improving coordination to ensure a more effective response to these needs.

An interactive discussion followed, giving HYGP members an opportunity to ask questions about how response priorities are identified and how humanitarian organisations coordinate their work. The discussion focused on how young people's needs are reflected in food security interventions, ways to improve their access to livelihood opportunities, and the possibility of involving youth representatives in Food Security Cluster meetings with humanitarian partners. Such participation would allow young people to raise their concerns and contribute to discussions on response priorities.

The meeting concluded with recommendations aimed at strengthening youth participation in humanitarian coordination and decision-making. These included exploring opportunities for young people to attend Food Security Cluster meetings with partners and holding regular meetings every two months between HYGP members and Food Security Cluster coordinators. The next steps also include coordinating with PNGO to ensure these meetings can continue.
